As discussed in our Signs of Aging Skin post, facial aging is a natural and expected part of life that for many starts in their late 20’s. Is there a way we can slow down the progression?
While there are many in-office options to help reverse signs of aging, i.e. cosmetic treatments, let’s focus on the steps that will help prevent, or at least delay, the need those cosmetic treatments.
1. Apply sunscreen daily
The most powerful way to prevent aging is protecting your skin from the sun. According to Dr. Erik Alexander, board-certified dermatologist with Forefront Dermatology, “many of the skin changes that we associate with aging are caused by the sun’s UV Rays. In fact, studies have shown that 90% of skin damage and aging skin is caused by overexposure to UV rays. Simple things like wearing a high quality sunscreen every day and avoiding the outdoors during peak UV hours can have a significant impact.”
2. Quit smoking
Smoking has been directly linked to the acceleration of skin aging. Smoking deteriorates collagen and other skin proteins, leaving the skin looking wrinkled and leathery in appearance. Additionally, smoking decreases the body’s overall oxygen levels which in turn decrease the skin’s natural resilience to external environmental factors.
3. Minimize alcohol intake
Similar to smoking, excessive alcohol consumption can age the skin, mostly through its effect on the skin’s hydration levels. The best way to avoid damaging your skin in the long and short term is to maintain a minimal or moderate level on your alcohol consumption.
4. Develop a proper skin care regimen
A proper skin care regimen not only keeps your skin looking its finest, but it can also minimize the effects of aging. In addition to regular cleansing and moisturizing of the skin, exfoliation should be a regular part of your routine. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and other unwanted debris that cling to the outer layer of the skin. The process of exfoliation can help the skin maintain a healthy cell turnover process and collagen production. Lastly, apply a retinoid-based skin care product at night. This type of product is proven to reduce wrinkles, increase blood flow in the skin, fight acne, increase cellular turnover, boost collagen and even skin tone.
5. Eat a well-balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight
What you eat now can have a future impact on your skin. Eating a healthy diet that is high in vitamins and antioxidants will provide your skin with all the nutritional value it needs to look and feel its best. “Weight fluctuations, particularly from “yo-yo” or crash dieting, can have negative effects on the skin. Not only do most of these diets restrict much needed nutrition from the skin, but the cycle of gains and losses can stretch the skin, leading to sagginess, stated Dr. Alexander. The best approach is to concentrate on maintaining your ideal weight through regular exercise and a healthy diet.”
