Scraping and Burning
Scraping and Burning (ED&C): Effective Treatment for Skin Cancer
If you have been diagnosed with a superficial skin cancer or a precancerous lesion, your dermatologist may recommend a procedure commonly known as “Scraping and Burning.” Medically termed Electrodessication and Curettage (ED&C), this time-tested technique is a highly effective, office-based procedure used to remove specific types of skin cancer with high cure rates and minimal recovery time.
At Forefront Dermatology, our board-certified specialists use ED&C to provide a quick and efficient solution for localized skin concerns.
SCHEDULE NOWWhat is the “Scraping and Burning” procedure?
Electrodessication and Curettage (ED&C) is a surgical method used to treat superficial skin cancers and growths. The “scraping” (curettage) involves using a sharp, spoon-shaped instrument called a curette to remove the cancerous tissue. The “burning” (electrodessication) uses a specialized electric needle to deliver heat to the area, which kills any remaining cancer cells and cauterizes the wound to stop bleeding.
Which conditions are treated with Scraping and Burning?
ED&C is most effective for small, well-defined, and superficial lesions. Our dermatologists typically utilize this method for:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form of skin cancer, specifically the superficial and nodular types.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) in situ: Also known as Bowen’s disease, where the cancer is confined to the top layer of skin.
- Actinic Keratoses: Precancerous, scaly patches caused by long-term sun damage.
- Seborrheic Keratoses: Benign (non-cancerous) skin growths that may be symptomatic or cosmetically undesirable.
Is Scraping and Burning painful?
No, the procedure itself is not painful. Because the site is thoroughly numbed with a local anesthetic, you should only feel a slight pressure or a “pulling” sensation during the scraping. After the anesthetic wears off, the site may feel similar to a minor scrape or a localized burn, which is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
What will the resulting scar look like?
The final result of a scraping and burning treatment is typically a flat, round, white scar that is slightly lighter than the surrounding skin. Because the procedure involves heat, the scar may be more noticeable than a surgical line, but it is often preferred for areas where stitches would be difficult to manage. Your dermatologist will discuss the expected cosmetic outcome based on the location of your lesion.
How effective is ED&C compared to other skin cancer treatments?
For superficial and early-stage basal and squamous cell carcinomas, ED&C boasts a cure rate of approximately 95% or higher. While Mohs Surgery is often preferred for cancers on the face or for more aggressive types, ED&C is an excellent, cost-effective, and fast alternative for non-critical areas like the trunk, arms, or legs.
