You don’t always have to break the bank to get an effective skin care product. Petroleum jelly is one of the cheapest and effective products for certain skin health needs. Dr. Kurt Grelck, board-certified dermatologist at Forefront Dermatology in Stevens Point, Wisconsin shares the top ways petroleum jelly can be used:
- Help heal injured skin such as minor cuts and scrapes. The jelly keeps the wound moist preventing it from drying out and forming a scab. It also prevents a scare from getting too deep. It is important to keep cleaning the wounds daily and reapplying the jelly as needed.
- Prevent chafing and blisters by applying the jelly to common areas where you experience rubbing like your feet, thighs or underarms.
- Relieve dry skin by applying the jelly for added moisture and lock-in protection. It can be applied anywhere including the lips and eyelids.
- Treat diaper rash by applying petroleum jelly during each diaper change. While the best preventative measure is to keep your child’s skin as dry and clean as possible, if you notice your child has a rash petroleum jelly will help clear it within 3 to 4 days.
While petroleum jelly has many benefits, it shouldn’t be used for everything. Avoid putting petroleum jelly on your face if you are acne-prone and / or if you have sensitive skin. The petroleum jelly may cause an increase in acne breakouts or result in skin irritation.
