Are breast implants right for you?

Deciding to get breast implants or have a breast implant exchange procedure is a big decision. It is important to keep in mind that when you add volume to the breasts, it is as much about enhancing the proportions of your breasts as it is about making them larger. The best choices of breast implants are often those that not only add fullness to the breasts but also serve as a beautiful complement to the overall proportions of your figure.
Breast implants can make a significant impact on your lifestyle, confidence, and self-esteem. At Forefront, we want you to feel confident that the path you choose is best for you. Our “patient decision checklist” features all of the variables to consider and explains the risks, guiding you through the process.

Your breast implant consultation

Forefront’s experienced plastic surgery team wants you to be fully educated about all aspects of breast surgery. During your initial consultation, you will meet with a surgeon for an examination and to discuss your goals. You will have the opportunity to get answers to your questions and will learn what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
We encourage you to bring photos of what you do and do not like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes. We will also conduct a 3-D image simulation demonstrating different implant sizes to give you an idea of the potential results of breast augmentation. Together, you and the surgeon will decide which option best fits your needs.

Breast implant options

Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, textures, and shapes. Your choice is a personal one based on your body type and the goals for the profile you hope to achieve. In addition, there are other important differences to consider.
Implant materials
Breast implants come in two types: silicone or saline.

Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are made of a silicone outer shell and filled with a silicone gel. These implants are known to be less prone to rippling, and many women choose them because they yield results that look and feel very natural. Silicone works well for women with thin body frames.
Silicone implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation procedures in women who are at least 22 years of age and for breast reconstruction procedures for patients of any age.

Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants have a silicone outer shell with a saline (salt-water) solution inside. They too provide natural-looking results. The FDA has approved the use of saline breast implants for breast augmentation procedures in patients at least 18 years old.
In addition to standard saline implants, IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Saline Breast Implants are also available. These advanced breast implant devices bridge the gap between saline and silicone implants, offering the best of both worlds and natural-looking results.

Implant placement
Patients considering breast Implants have two options for implant placement: subglandular or submuscular.

Subglandular
Subglandular means above the muscle. The implant is placed between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle.

Submuscular
Submuscular means below the muscle. The implant is placed beneath both the breast tissue and muscle tissue.
Your surgeon will work with you to determine which placement is ideal for you. For either placement, an incision is made in the crease at the bottom of the breast, between the breast and the chest wall.

Breast implant exchange

While advances in breast implants have made them long-lasting and natural-looking, we often see women who want to exchange their implants at some point. The fact is that implants do not last forever, and it is sometimes necessary to have them replaced from time to time. Plus, there are other reasons women decide to exchange their implants, including:

  • Switching from saline to silicone or vice-versa
  • To increase or decrease breast size
  • To adjust or enhance the shape and projection of the breasts
  • To correct complications or address dissatisfaction with the previous breast augmentation

Breast implant exchange procedures are often less complex and time-consuming than the original breast augmentation procedure. The same incisions can typically be used for implantation, leading to no additional scarring in other areas.
