What is Gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is male breast reduction surgery. Men suffering from gynecomastia have enlarged breasts that can not be improved through diet or exercise. If you have this condition, you may be self-conscious about your chest’s appearance. Male breast reduction surgery can restore the chest to a tighter, flatter, more masculine appearance.

Your Gynecomastia surgery consultation

At Forefront, we believe in educating our patients so they can make well-informed decisions about the procedures they choose. As a candidate for gynecomastia surgery, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your concerns and personal aesthetic goals. The consultation includes an examination and a conversation about the realistic potential outcomes based on your case-specific details. You will learn what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What to expect with male breast reduction surgery

Gynecomastia surgery involves two key techniques. First, the surgeon uses liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue in the chest. Using a scalpel, they will then excise extra skin and glandular tissue.
The nipples and areolas (darker skin around the nipple) may need to be repositioned if they are not centered and symmetrical. In some cases, the surgeon may reduce the size of the areolas as well.
Your surgeon will do everything possible to keep incision scars inconspicuous. Often, cuts can be hidden along the natural color line around the areolas. If additional incisions are necessary, scarring typically flattens and fades during the months following gynecomastia correction.
Many patients can go home the same day after gynecomastia surgery.

Gynecomastia surgery recovery

We recommend taking at least a week off from work and restricting activity after male breast reduction surgery. It is normal to have some bruising, soreness, and swelling during recovery. This typically improves significantly after the first week and resolves completely in a few weeks to a few months. Pain medication can manage any discomfort.
Most men are required to wear a compression garment for a few weeks, which will aid in swelling reduction and promote faster healing. You should be able to resume full activities, including working out, in four to six weeks.
At a post-surgical exam, our clinical staff will monitor your progress and make sure you are healing properly. If the surgeon used sutures that were not dissolvable, they will be removed during this checkup.
