What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that corrects various ear anomalies by adjusting the shape, proportion, or protrusion of the ears. Procedures may reconstruct misshapen or missing cartilage, reshape ears that are asymmetrical or do not match, or fix prominent ears. This last example is the most common otoplasty, also known as “pinning”. The procedure “pins back” ears that stick out more than two centimeters from the head.

Otoplasty for you or your child

Prominent or protruding ears can be a source of self-consciousness for both children and adults alike. Forefront surgeons work with people of all ages to help them achieve more “normal” looking ears. We recommend that patients be at least five years old before receiving otoplasty, ensuring their ear cartilage is fully developed and stable enough for the procedure.

It is essential to feel comfortable with the surgeon you choose for otoplasty. This is particularly true for children who undergo the procedure. We encourage asking questions beginning with the initial consultation, and continuing throughout surgery and recovery to ensure you feel comfortable with your surgeon and confident with your decision to choose Forefront.

Your otoplasty consultation

At Forefront, our process begins with an in-depth consultation with the surgeon where you can discuss your concerns and treatment goals. The surgeon will also conduct a thorough examination of you or your child and offer an assessment of what they can accomplish through ear surgery.

This consultation is an opportunity to get answers to any questions you may have regarding what to expect before, during, and after the surgical procedure. We believe that when patients or parents are well-informed about otoplasty, they are more prepared and have a more positive experience.

What to expect with ear surgery

Ear surgery is highly individualized, so the techniques used will vary depending upon the ears’ particular characteristics and what the patient wishes to change.

In the case of prominent ears, patients are given general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear and reshapes the cartilage to help the ear sit closer to the head. Incisions are typically hidden in the natural folds at the back of the ear. The procedure usually takes one to two hours and most patients go home the same day.

Otoplasty recovery

Most people find it easiest to take the first week after otoplasty surgery off of work or school, while they wear a protective head dressing.

Patients need to protect their ears and avoid strenuous activity during the healing process which takes about six to eight weeks. During this time, some swelling, bruising, and tenderness is normal. Pain medication may be recommended to manage these symptoms.
Patients should also elevate their head while sleeping and avoid laying on either ear until fully healed.

The surgeon will provide full post-operative instructions and prescribe any necessary medication. If sutures are used, they will be removed during a follow-up visit.
