Microdermabrasion
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is less aggressive than regular dermabrasion but still offers outstanding results. Instead of sanding or scraping your skin, microdermabrasion uses tiny exfoliating crystals that are sprayed directly on the skin to remove dead or damaged layers.
This chemical-free, non-invasive treatment gently smooths, brightens, and rejuvenates your skin. Microdermabrasion is ideal for patients of all ages, including teens and young adults.
REQUEST NOWWhat is microdermabrasion used for?
Forefront Dermatology uses microdermabrasion to recover and restore damaged skin and treat a variety of skin issues, such as:
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Scars (including mild acne scars)
- Sun damage
- Dark spots
- Stretch marks
- Dull skin
- Uneven skin tone
- And more
Is microdermabrasion safe?
Regular dermabrasion is generally only safe for people with fair skin, potentially resulting in scarring or discoloration for patients with darker skin. However, microdermabrasion works on all skin types and colors and only makes subtle changes. Microdermabrasion is also a far simpler procedure that requires no surgery or anesthetics and very little downtime.
Microdermabrasion can spread infection from one part of your skin to another, so you should not have microdermabrasion if you have a skin infection (such as impetigo), warts, herpes, open sores, or a bleeding disorder. Your Forefront dermatologist will review your medical history to confirm that microdermabrasion is a safe choice for you.
Is microdermabrasion effective?
Yes, multiple microdermabrasion sessions usually improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and other blemishes. However, microdermabrasion only treats the outermost layer of your skin. For deeper wrinkles and scars, you may need more aggressive treatment like a chemical peel or laser treatments.
If you are considering microdermabrasion, your Forefront dermatologist can explain its advantages and disadvantages and help you choose the most effective treatment.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
In addition to being safe and effective, microdermabrasion has many other benefits, including:
- It’s relatively painless
- There are minimal risks involved
- Very little recovery time (usually 24 hours or less)
How long does microdermabrasion treatment take?
The procedure itself is short – about 45 minutes on average. We typically recommend six microdermabrasion treatments (every two weeks for the first 12-week period) for maximum results. Continued treatment every 4-8 weeks will help keep your skin as healthy and fresh as possible.
Your new skin, which will be pink or slightly red at first, gradually develops a normal color. You can use makeup as soon as the skin is healed. Wearing sunscreen is mandatory for a few days after each microdermabrasion treatment.
