Blepharoplasty
What Blepharoplasty does—and doesn’t do
Blepharoplasty is cosmetic eyelid surgery. The procedure removes excess skin and fat around the eyes and tightens the underlying muscle tissue, reducing drooping eyelids and bagginess. In addition to cosmetic purposes, blepharoplasty is sometimes medically necessary. In some cases, extra skin on the upper lid can droop down enough to obstruct a person’s field of vision.
While blepharoplasty can reduce the hooded appearance of upper eyelids and undereye puffiness, it will not remove crow’s feet, lift sagging eyebrows, or eliminate dark circles under the eyes. Forefront offers other surgical and nonsurgical options for addressing these conditions.
REQUEST NOWWho can benefit from eyelid surgery
The delicate skin around the eyes is often the first part of the face where people notice the signs of aging. Sagging skin and bags around the eyes can make one look tired or older than they really are. Blepharoplasty can be effective in giving patients a more youthful appearance.
An eye doctor may also suggest blepharoplasty if an evaluation determines that the removal of eyelid skin will help improve a patient’s vision.
Your Blepharoplasty consultation
At Forefront, we want patients to understand cosmetic procedures like blepharoplasty so they can make informed decisions. At an initial consultation, you will meet with the surgeon and be given the opportunity to discuss your concerns and cosmetic goals for your eyelid surgery. The surgeon will explain the procedure in detail, along with any risks and potential complications. This consultation will lay the foundation of a doctor-patient relationship based on comfort and trust.
What to expect with eyelid surgery
During a blepharoplasty, incisions are made on the upper or lower eyelids. The surgeon removes excess skin and fat and tightens the muscles and tissue underneath. This reduces the hooded, drooping appearance, smoothing and softening the area, making the eyes appear more open and awake. Because of the placement of the incisions along the natural lines of the upper and lower lids, any scarring will be hard to detect.
The surgery takes one to two hours and can be performed using a variety of anesthesia options. Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day.
Recovery after blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty impacts the entire eye area, so we recommend that patients avoid reading for two to three days after surgery to cut down on eye strain. Some swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal for up to two weeks after surgery.
Most blepharoplasty patients return to non-strenuous work within seven to ten days following surgery. You can return to strenuous activity levels in four to six weeks.
