As we strive for picture perfect skin by using countless expensive products and changing our diet, the one thing many don’t realize may cause skin issues is alcohol. While alcohol has a slew of common side effects that most people are aware of, the one that many don’t consider is the effect it has on one’s skin health.
Inflammation
“Alcohol creates inflammation throughout your body. This inflammation causes your skin to appear dull and discolored while enlarging your pores and creating fine lines,” stated Dr. Matthew Fanelli, board-certified dermatologist with Forefront Dermatology. “If you suffer from chronic conditions like acne, eczema or psoriasis, inflammation from alcohol can worsen or trigger your condition. “
Facial Flushing
Alcohol causes small blood vessel to widen, bringing more blood closer to the surface. “A flushed appearance and potentially broken capillaries can leave your skin appearing unhealthy for days,” noted Dr. Fanelli. “Alcohol is actually one of the most aggressive factors in destroying skin health. If you want to start turning back time, it’s time to slow down the alcohol intake.”
Dehydration
Alcohol causes dehydration in the body, stripping your skin of the fluid it needs to properly function. Proper hydration is important for overall good health. Being hydrated – with water, not alcohol – aids in digestion, circulation, absorption and rids the body and skin of toxins.
“While cutting back alcohol can help your skin in the long run, maintaining healthy skin takes a multi-step approach,” added, Dr Fanelli. “You need to be conscience of all areas in your life including alcohol intake, diet, skin care regimen, protection from UV rays. The good thing is, it is never too late to start making positive life and skin care choices.”
