Breast revision surgery
Reasons for breast revision surgery
After breast augmentation, patients sometimes need to undergo additional surgery to correct problems or address certain conditions that may develop with implants. Reasons for having breast revision surgery include capsular contracture, implant malposition, implant deflation, implant rupture, or a desire to change the size of the breast implants or remove them entirely.

Forefront surgeons and staff are acutely aware of the concerns of women and can help you choose what type of breast revision suits your needs. The process starts with a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your concerns and goals for surgery. An examination will help determine the expected outcomes for your particular case.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn what to expect before, during, and after surgery. Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We want you to make a well-informed decision about your care and will do all we can so you feel comfortable and confident about the procedure.
What happens during breast revision surgery
Breast revision surgery usually involves removing breast implants and replacing them with new ones. This may be because the patient wants a different look by switching to either larger or smaller implants. Another aesthetic reason for breast revision surgery is to correct implant malposition. This involves moving or replacing implants that are positioned incorrectly on the chest.
Implant deflation, implant rupture, and capsular contracture are all failures of the original implant that can be corrected with breast revision surgery. Capsular contracture is a condition where scar tissue forms tightly around the breast implant. An open capsulotomy treats this scarring or revises the shape of the pocket that holds the implant. This usually involves surgical removal of the scar tissue and often the placement of a new implant.
Patients may also choose to remove implants and not replace them. This procedure, as well as replacing implants with a smaller size, sometimes also requires a breast lift procedure to reshape the surrounding tissue and skin.
A breast revision procedure usually takes one to two hours and is performed using general anesthesia. Most patients can go home once they recover from the anesthesia.
Recovery after breast revision surgery
After breast revision surgery, some swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort is normal. These symptoms can be managed with pain medication. Patients should expect to take a week or two off from work. You may be fitted with a compression bra to wear for a few weeks to promote healing and reduce swelling. Strenuous activity can be resumed in four to six weeks.
Post-operative instructions will be provided and follow-up visits scheduled where our staff will remove your bandages and monitor your progress as you heal.
