Why women ask for breast reduction surgery

Reduction mammoplasty, better known as breast reduction surgery, can help women feel better physically and improve their confidence. In addition to feeling self-conscious about disproportionately large and heavy breasts, patients may suffer from chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, and rashes under the breasts. Insurance may cover surgery if it meets certain guidelines for improving a patient’s physical well-being.
Breast reduction surgery alleviates these symptoms of discomfort by improving the shape, size, or fullness of the breasts. Women often report a significant improvement in their quality of life after the procedure.

Your breast reduction consultation

Patient satisfaction after breast reduction is very high. At Forefront, we believe this begins when patients have the information to make well-informed decisions about their procedure and surgeon.
During a consultation, the surgeon will examine you and discuss your concerns and the results you can expect from the procedure in your specific case. Breast reduction is a highly customized procedure based on your anatomy and how you wish to look. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn what will happen before, during, and after surgery.
Deciding to have a procedure and choosing a surgeon are personal decisions. We want you to feel comfortable and confident that the options you choose meet your needs.

What happens during breast reduction surgery?

Surgeons often use an “anchor” method for breast reduction procedures. Incisions are made around the areola and vertically to the lower part of the breast in the shape of an anchor. Some patients only need an incision around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) to produce the results they are seeking.
Fatty and glandular breast tissue is removed, along with excess skin. Breasts end up with a more lifted shape and nipple position and a size that is more proportionate with the body. The areolas may be resized and reshaped as well.
There will be some scarring from the procedure, but it will fade and soften, becoming less noticeable over the year following the procedure. Our surgeons do what they can to minimize the impact of incisions and to retain as much nipple sensation as possible.
Breast reduction surgery usually takes one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Patients can return home as soon as they recover from the anesthesia.

Recovery after breast reduction surgery

Most women return to work within one to two weeks and resume normal activity about four weeks after breast reduction surgery. You can expect some bruising, tenderness, and swelling for the first few weeks. This discomfort can be managed with pain medication. You may be fitted with a compression bra to wear during this time to reduce swelling and promote healing.
