What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover aims to address excess abdominal skin, stretch marks, sagging breasts, and other undesirable effects of pregnancy. While breast implants, a tummy tuck, and liposuction are the most popular individual surgeries that new moms request, having multiple procedures done at once can offer several benefits including reduced anesthesia costs and only one recovery period.

Our board-certified surgeons have a special understanding of the needs of women, and strive to deliver a natural look that will help moms love their post-baby bodies.

Your Mommy Makeover consultation

During a detailed consultation with Forefront physicians, you will undergo a thorough medical examination and hear about the various Mommy Makeover procedures available. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions regarding surgical preparation and recovery so you are fully informed when making your decision.

The best candidates for a Mommy Makeover are those in a good state of health, have reached a stable body weight where they wish to remain, and have finished having children. This is because pregnancy after the procedure could undo some of the effects by stretching out the skin, creating new sagging.

Mommy Makeover procedures

Your Mommy Makeover will be customized to your personal needs and goals. The suite of procedures may include:

Tummy Tuck
Also known as an abdominoplasty, this is one of the most popular Mommy Makeover cosmetic surgeries. During pregnancy, the skin is stretched, and the abdominal muscles are forced apart to accommodate your growing baby. This may have left you with a protruding belly and sagging skin, which are challenging to address with diet and exercise alone.

Not only is excess skin and fat removed from the abdomen during this portion of a Mommy Makeover, but stretched-out muscles can be tightened as well.

Liposuction
Women often gain as much as 40 pounds during pregnancy. The “extra fat” that doesn’t go away after birth may go to lower body areas like the hips, thighs, and butt as well as other areas of the body. Liposuction as part of a Mommy Makeover removes fat from isolated spots, including below the chin and on the upper arms, back, bra bulge area, abdomen, flanks, inner and outer thighs, knees, and calves. The goal is to create more balanced, leaner contours to enhance the natural body shape. A suction device is used to remove the fat tissue through a small incision.

Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)
The breasts often become enlarged during pregnancy, but lose volume shortly after giving birth or breastfeeding. As a result, the skin and tissue may shrink or become flattened. During a Mommy Makeover, many women decide to increase their breast size with implants for better body proportion and to replace volume that is lost. Implants are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures and can be placed concurrently with a breast lift.

Breast Lift
Breasts that sag due to volume loss after pregnancy can be lifted to their original position either with or without implants. This procedure is frequently requested during a Mommy Makeover.

Breast Reduction
Significant breast growth is possible as milk production begins and fat stores increase, and in some women, this added volume does not always go away after giving birth. Very large breasts can cause back, neck, and shoulder pain. It can also be difficult to find clothes that fit properly, and to exercise comfortably. Breast reduction aims to remove the extra volume and restore the breasts to a more comfortable size.

Vaginal Rejuvenation
Childbirth can sometimes stretch the labia, causing some women to wish to reduce them for both comfort and appearance. The natural aging process can also cause changes that can impact feminine wellness. Women facing these problems have a nonsurgical solution in ThermiVa®, a procedure that uses gentle radio waves to restore natural, tighter, and firmer tissues in the vagina.

How to prepare for a Mommy Makeover

Several weeks before the day of the operation, patients may need to undergo a medical evaluation and adjust how they’re taking certain medications and supplements. Some medications that will need to be avoided include those that are more likely to cause excessive bleeding, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelets) and anti-inflammatory drugs. Be sure to discuss any medication changes with your primary caregiver. It’s also important to quit smoking before a Mommy Makeover, as tobacco use can increase the risk of complications and delay healing.

What is recovery from a Mommy Makeover like?

Recovery time after a Mommy Makeover will depend on the types of procedures chosen, but patients can typically expect around two weeks of healing time at home. Some swelling is normal for several weeks, and it will take some time before full results are revealed.

Your surgeon will give you general advice to follow including:

  • Arrange help: You will likely need friends or family members to assist with childcare and daily tasks for the first few days or weeks.
  • Wear compression garments. These will help reduce swelling and discomfort in the breast and stomach while also holding skin and tissue in the correct position for healing.
  • Follow post-op instructions. These will include taking care of the incision site, concerns to look out for, and how to take medications.
  • Avoid strenuous movements. For six weeks, you should avoid contact sports, heavy lifting, running, and twisting.
  • Stay hydrated and eat nutritious foods: Proper nutrition aids in healing and boosts your overall well-being.
  • Listen to your body: Pay attention to any unusual symptoms and report them to your surgeon promptly.
