While cosmetic treatments can technically be performed year-round, some cosmetic treatments are recommended to be performed in the fall and winter when the sun’s ultraviolet rays are less intense thus optimizing results.
Here are 4 cosmetic treatments better suited for fall and winter:
Laser Treatments
While lasers can treat a variety of skin concerns, in this case we are referencing laser treatments that are targeting acne scars, fine lines, pigmentation, melasma, and age/sun spots. According to Dr. Michael Dreifke, a board-certified dermatologist with Forefront Dermatology, “Laser treatments commonly cause temporary inflammation in the skin. The treated/inflamed tissue is more vulnerable to sunlight. This means that heat, humidity, and sun exposure can cause the skin to repair more slowly. It is recommended to perform them during the fall and winter for optimal results and recovery.”
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are performed to help even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of acne scars, correct sun damage, and resurface the skin. There are many different types of chemicals peels, from ones that target only the outermost layer of the skin to those that target more deeply. While these peels can technically be performed year-round, it is usually best to save them for fall and winter when the sun’s rays are not the strongest, and you are more likely to spend time indoors.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
PDT is utilized to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin while also removing pre-cancerous cells. “In this treatment, a photosensitizer, and naturally occurring substance, is applied to the entire face and/or scalp to help seek out damaged skin cells and allow for proper targeting,” noted Dr. Dreifke. “PDT is best performed in winter due to the photosensitizing nature of the procedure. It is much easier for the skin to burn with minimal sunlight immediately after the procedure. Thus it is best performed in the fall and winter.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a short procedure for leg vein removal in which a fine needle is inserted into the targeted veins. A chemical salt solution is injected causing the troublesome veins to become damaged. The treated vein is “obliterated” causing it to fade away. Wearing thick compression stockings after treatment is highly recommended to ensure optimal results. While these could be worn in summer, they are more comfortable on the cool days of winter.
