Extractions

What Are Extractions?

As we go about our busy lives, our skin gets clogged with dead skin cells, excess oils, and debris – all of which can cause breakouts. Facial or acne extractions are the process of clearing your clogged pores, either manually or through mechanical means.

Manual extraction uses a person’s fingers, while mechanical extraction uses a metal tool called a pore extractor. The tool places gentle pressure on the pore, extracting anything inside it.

Why Do I Need a Professional Acne Extraction?

Taking matters into your own hands (literally) and popping your own pimples isn’t a wise decision. Most people’s hands and fingernails are covered in bacteria, increasing your risk of scarring, infection, and more. Popping pimples can even delay your body’s natural healing process, causing them to last longer.

During an extraction, your Forefront dermatologist will use gloved hands or sanitized tools. All extractions are performed under a magnifying lamp with bright light, so we can see every pore that needs treatment. We also place eye pads or protective eyewear on your eyes as an extra precaution.

What Are the Benefits of an Acne Extraction Procedure?

When performed correctly, extractions provide countless benefits for your skin, including:

• Removing the primary causes of blackheads, whiteheads, and other acne
• Healing breakouts faster without any additional skin damage
• Precisely targeting pores to prevent future breakouts
• Allowing skin products to absorb more effectively when pores are clear

What Should I Expect During a Dermatologist Extraction?

At Forefront Dermatology, we follow a safe and highly effective acne extraction method:

1. Cleanse your skin.
2. Apply a desincrustation fluid or enzyme with steam to soften the skin and prepare it for the extraction.
3. Loosen your pores with an ultrasonic device called a skin scrubber.
4. Using the magnifying lamp as a guide, apply gentle pressure around each pore to extract its contents.
5. Apply an antiseptic to soothe your skin and prevent any post-extraction redness or breakouts.

Pores that are not ready for extraction on the first attempt may require multiple treatments before we can fully clear them. Be sure to ask your Forefront dermatologist if you have any questions about the procedure.

Does Forefront Dermatology Do Comedone Extractions?

Comedones are blocked hair follicles that are often seen in combination with acne, usually on the forehead or chin. We can remove comedones during the extraction process as well.

How Do I Maintain My Extraction?

Between extractions, it’s important to follow a consistent skin care routine that incorporates cleansing, moisturizing, and exfoliation.

Daily cleansing helps prevent debris and grime from settling into your pores. You should moisturize daily as well, especially if you plan on having more extractions in the future. (When your skin is dehydrated, extractions are harder to perform.) Exfoliating just a few times a week can also remove dead skin cells that clog your pores.
