Dr. George Francis was born and raised in Monessen, PA. He attended Washington and Jefferson College where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at the University of Bologna, in Italy, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. After graduation, he moved to the Pittsburgh area and continued his education at St. Francis Medical Center where he completed a residency program in internal medicine. To pursue his interest in dermatology, he also completed a residency program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and became a board certified dermatologist. He then joined the dermatology practice of Drs. Farney and Nieland. Dr. Francis was very involved with St. Francis Medical Center and in 1993 opened his own practice across the street from the hospital. He was named Chief, in the Division of Dermatology at St. Francis Hospital and held that position until the hospital closed. He was also named Chief, in the Division of Dermatology at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in 2004 and held that position until his associate, Dr. Melanie Costa, took over the responsibilities in 2008. Dr. Francis has also enjoyed teaching dermatology to students and residents throughout his career. He currently lives in Fox Chapel with his wife Susan, and enjoys photography, travel and reading.
