Can Botox or Dermal Fillers Be Used After Skin Cancer Treatment?

From the anxiety of a new diagnosis to the worry and stress of treatment options to the road to recovery, a skin cancer diagnosis can quickly upend your world, leaving you longing for a return to normal. You not only want to get back to your typical daily routine, but you’re likely ready for some self-care to lift your spirits.

Many patients wonder: Are BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers off the table after skin cancer treatment? How soon can I get back to my typical skin care routine?

Like so many questions when it comes to medical care, the answer is…it depends. But the good news is that for most people, BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can generally be used safely after skin cancer treatment. Just keep a few important considerations in mind:

Timing is key

Did your skin cancer treatment include chemotherapy or radiation? If you’re still in active treatment, your immune system is likely taking a hit, which means the risk of infection from a cosmetic procedure is much higher. Even after you complete chemo or radiation, your body still needs time to recover, so it’s recommended you wait six months or so to allow your immune system to regain strength. The upside is that you’ll see better results from fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic.

If you’re now on maintenance therapy (ongoing treatments after the initial therapy), consult your oncologist before pursuing any cosmetic treatments, as some maintenance therapies may compromise your body’s ability to heal from (or respond to) cosmetic procedures.

Safety always comes first

BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are usually considered safe after skin cancer treatment, but you should keep a few things in mind:

  • Check in with your immune system: While BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers don’t directly impact your immune system, undergoing either procedure during or right after treatment, especially chemotherapy and radiation, can potentially be risky. Both cancer treatments suppress the immune system, increasing the likelihood of infection or complications.
  • Pick the best type of filler: Hyaluronic acid-based options (such as Juvederm® or Restylane®) are often the best choice because they’re less likely to cause adverse reactions. On the other hand, fillers that stimulate collagen production (Sculptra®, for example) may be less effective if you’re still recovering from treatments.
  • Don’t forget about infection risk: Any cosmetic procedure that involves injections carries with it a small risk of infection, and that risk can be larger if your immune system is compromised from skin cancer treatments. Always ensure these cosmetic procedures are performed by a qualified professional.

Don’t feel ready yet? Just focus on your skin care

Even if you’re not quite ready for your next BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal filler, you can still take steps every day to care for your skin after skin cancer treatment to help you look and feel your best:

  • Follow your surgeon’s and/or dermatologist’s guidance regarding wound care after excision. And make sure you’re regularly cleaning and moisturizing the treated area. If you were prescribed ointments to promote healing, be sure to use them as directed.
  • Sunscreen is important! Be sure to regularly apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily—even on cloudy days. In addition to sunscreen, wear hats, sunglasses and protective clothing when you can to further shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Stock up on gentle moisturizers to combat dry skin caused by cancer treatments. Just be sure to avoid any products with harsh chemicals that may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Stay vigilant with your skin checks, and keep an eye out for new spots, discolored areas, or any changes in existing moles. And schedule regular follow-up appointments with your dermatologist to catch any potential issues early.
  • Don’t pick at any scabs, but instead let scabs heal naturally to reduce the risk of scars or infection. Ask your dermatologist about silicone-based scar gels or sheets to improve the appearance of any scars that remain after treatment. Laser therapy or microneedling may also be an option.
