Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

in Appleton, WI

If you have spent years in the sun, you may have developed rough, scaly patches known as actinic keratoses (AKs). If left untreated, these “precancers” can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma. At Forefront Dermatology, we offer Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a highly effective, non-invasive treatment that targets and destroys these damaged cells while leaving the surrounding healthy skin intact.

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

Photodynamic Therapy, often referred to as “Blue Light Therapy,” is a multi-step treatment that combines a light-sensitizing medication with a specific wavelength of light to destroy abnormal skin cells. It is primarily used to treat actinic keratoses on the face, scalp, and extremities, but it is also an effective solution for certain types of superficial skin cancers and even severe acne.

What are the benefits of choosing PDT over other treatments?

Many patients choose PDT because it offers several advantages over traditional “spot treatments” like cryosurgery (freezing):

  • Unlike freezing one visible spot at a time, PDT treats an entire “field” (such as the whole forehead), destroying visible lesions as well as microscopic ones that haven’t surfaced yet.
  • PDT typically results in less scarring and pigment change than surgery or burning.
  • There are no incisions, no stitches, and no needles required for the therapy itself.

How many PDT sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the severity of your sun damage and the area being treated. While many patients see significant improvement after just one session, your Forefront dermatologist may recommend a series of two or three treatments spaced several weeks apart to achieve the best clinical and cosmetic results.
