JUVEDERM® is actually the name for a family of popular fillers, each with a unique profile designed to temporarily address specific signs of aging on the face. All of the options are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a complex sugar responsible for holding on to vital moisture in the skin.
How does JUVEDERM® work ?
A loss of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin due to aging and environmental factors plays a large role in the formation of wrinkles. Aging also leads to a reduction in subcutaneous facial fat, causing hollows to develop and tissue to sag. Another issue is that bone reabsorption occurs as we age, particularly in the mid-facial region, resulting in a thinned-out or tired appearance.
JUVEDERM® is injected directly into the skin, restoring hyaluronic acid and providing physical volume to take the place of missing collagen, bone, and fat. This hydrates the skin and stretches it tighter again, similar to adding air to a deflating balloon. The result is smoother skin with a rounder, more youthful look. The gel can “fill in” wrinkles on a small scale, or facial hollows on a larger scale.
What can JUVEDERM® treat ?
JUVEDERM® is designed to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe fine lines, wrinkles, plump lips, and lift cheekbones.
- Facial wrinkles and fine lines
- Parentheses lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth
- Sagging or depressed cheekbones
- Thin lips
- Vertical lip lines
What are the JUVEDERM® filler options ?
Each JUVEDERM® filler type is designed to address a specific need.
JUVEDERM® ULTRA XC
Designed to create a fuller look for thin lips, Ultra XC can address lips that have lost volume over time, or naturally thin lips – with improvements lasting up to a year.
JUVEDERM® ULTRA PLUS XC
Made as a thicker gel than Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC is designed to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe facial lines, such as deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
JUVEDERM VOLUMA® XC
This injectable is designed to restore volume to the apples of the cheeks: filling out hollows and flat patches, softens harsh angles, and provides structure that can subtly lift jowls that form due to sagging lower on the face. Results can last up to two years.
JUVEDERM VOLLURE™ XC
Similar to Ultra Plus XC, Vollure™ XC is made for treating lines and wrinkles that appear around the mouth (such as marionette lines) and nose. This filler also has a bit more versatility and can be used in many locations. The formula was designed with long-lasting results in mind. Results can last up to 18 months.
JUVEDERM VOLBELLA® XC
A versatile option, Volbella® XC can be used to add subtle volume to thin lips and to soften vertical lip lines. Another common off-label use is for tear troughs, which can help minimize the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Results can last up to a year.
What is a JUVEDERM® session like ?
Once we determine that JUVEDERM® is the right solution for you, we can then schedule your first treatment. This will include instruction for you to follow prior to your treatment, such as avoiding blood thinners like alcohol and aspirin. When you come in during your treatment day, your Forefront Dermatologist will prep the area using an alcohol wipe. A topical anesthetic may be used at this time, but isn’t always necessary as the filler contains lidocaine. Your provider will then make a series of strategic injections with a fine gauge needle while molding the filler with their fingers for best results.
What Results Can Be Expected from JUVEDERM® ?
You will probably see some results from the treatment right away. Folds, lines, and wrinkles are eliminated, and increased volume and elasticity can be visible right away. Keep in mind that it can take two weeks for any minimal redness and swelling to completely dissipate. Follow up treatments are recommended to maintain a youthful complexion, with intervals depending on the type of dermal filler.
