What is Tixel®?

Tixel® is a unique medical device that combines heat and motion to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, using your own collagen to produce the effects. Because of this, Tixel® delivers results that improve over time and can last for several years. The results are comparable to deep skin peels and intensive laser treatments, but with much less downtime, less pain, and faster recovery times.

How does Tixel® treatment work?

Tixel® uses a small handpiece with a self-sterilized, medical-grade titanium tip that is passed over the face and neck. The tip consists of 81 tiny pyramids that are heated to 400°C. Tixel® laser treatment delivers short bursts of pure natural heat directly to your skin’s surface without damaging deeper skin tissues. This process stimulates collagen production, which helps tighten and smooth your skin.

Are there different Tixel® treatment types?

Yes, Tixel® offers three levels of treatment: full ablative, medium ablative, and open channel.

Full ablative Tixel® treatment is ideal for skin tightening and scar treatment. At this high level, the results are comparable to a deep chemical peel or fractional laser resurfacing treatment with just one session. During the first 2-3 days, your skin may be pink or red and develop small crusts – however, make-up can be worn 48 hours after treatment to help cover them.

Medium ablative Tixel® treatment can achieve the same results as full ablative treatment, but it will require more sessions. However, the recovery time is shorter, with most patients resuming normal activities within 24 hours.

Open channel Tixel® treatment is the lightest option available. The heat from the device creates “channels” in the upper layer of your skin, increasing your skin’s porosity and ability to absorb topical medicines. This treatment level can effectively target conditions like melasma, rosacea, and others with minimal downtime (24 hours or less).

What can I expect during Tixel® treatment?

Anesthetic cream will be applied 30 minutes before if needed (it is unnecessary for open channel treatments). After your skin is cleaned and prepared, we may mark a grid in white pencil to allow us to work in sections. The device passes directly onto your skin for a fraction of a second, delivering short bursts of heat until the entire treatment area is covered. Treatment time is usually 30-60 minutes.

How many Tixel® treatment sessions will I need?

It depends on what treatment level you choose – for example, full ablative treatment achieves results faster than medium ablative treatment. For best results, the recommended treatment is a course of 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by every 6-12 months thereafter. Open channel treatments can be performed every 2-4 weeks.

Are there any Tixel® treatment side effects?

Again, it will depend on your treatment level. Your skin may feel warm, tight, and slightly sensitive – like you have spent time in the sun – for 24-72 hours after treatment. You may also experience mild swelling and redness.

After full and medium ablative treatments, your skin may remain pink or red for 2-3 days, and small crusts may form for 7-10 days. Because open channel treatment is less intense, you can return to normal activities within 24 hours. Tixel® treatment around the mouth may trigger cold sores, which you can treat the same way as any cold sore outbreak.

Ask your Forefront dermatologist about the best Tixel® option(s) based on your skin type and the results you want to achieve.
