in Goldsboro, NC

What is a benign skin lesion?

A benign skin lesion is a non-cancerous growth or abnormality on the skin. Patients might notice small bumps, discolorations, or raised areas. While they are harmless, many people choose to have benign skin lesions removed for cosmetic reasons or to prevent irritation.

Some common skin growths that are benign include:

  • Milia – tiny white cysts/bumps on the face
  • Skin tags – small, flesh-colored bumps
  • Cherry angiomas – bright red, mole-like spots
  • Sun spots or lentigines – skin patches darkened by UV exposure
  • Sebaceous hyperplasias – large oil glands often on the forehead
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra – small, brown-black facial bumps around the eyes and cheeks
  • Benign seborrheic keratoses – warty, wax-like growths also called skin barnacles

Even though benign skin lesions are usually harmless, it is important to have them evaluated by a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any potential skin cancer or other underlying conditions.

How are non-cancerous lesions diagnosed?

The first step to diagnosing a benign skin lesion is a thorough physical examination by a board-certified dermatologist. In some cases, a dermatoscope may be used to magnify the lesion and get a closer look at its characteristics.

If there is any concern about the nature of the growth, a biopsy may be performed to rule out malignancy (i.e., skin cancer). However, most benign lesions are easily identifiable and do not require further testing.

What is a benign skin lesion removal session like?

Many benign skin growths can be removed quickly and comfortably in our office. The best removal method depends on the type, size, and location of the lesion, as well as your skin type.
In most cases, benign skin lesion removal is a quick and minimally uncomfortable procedure that does not require general anesthesia. However, depending on the size and location of the lesion, as well as the removal method used, a local anesthetic may be applied to ensure your comfort.
Common treatment techniques include:

  • Cryotherapy – Freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen, causing it to fall off over time
  • Excision – Cutting the lesion out with a scalpel for complete removal
  • Laser therapy – Using focused light energy to break down pigmented lesions or small vascular growths
  • Electrocautery – Burning off the lesion with a controlled electric current

Your board-certified Forefront dermatologist will discuss the most appropriate method for your specific needs and cosmetic goals.

What is recovery like?

Recovery after benign skin lesion removal depends on the treatment method used. In most cases, healing is quick and requires minimal downtime. Less invasive treatments like laser therapy result in minimal skin irritation and recovery time, while healing from procedures like cryotherapy, excision, and electrocautery can take 1-3 weeks.
Avoiding sun exposure and following post-treatment care instructions will help minimize scarring and promote smooth healing.

Does insurance cover removal of benign skin growths

Since these lesions are non-cancerous and removal is often considered cosmetic, most insurance plans do not cover the procedure. However, we are happy to provide information on pricing and discuss your treatment options during your consultation.
