What is Hyperhidrosis, and how does Botox® help?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excess sweating regardless of temperature or activity level. It exists in two forms: Primary focal, and secondary generalized. Primary focal is a genetic condition affecting 2.8% of the U.S. population, while secondary hyperhidrosis is causal and its symptoms can be treated.

Botox® reduces sweating in qualifying patients by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses that stimulate sweat glands.

How does Botox for Hyperhidrosis treatment work ?

Botox, which is clinically known as botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein. When injected under the arms, it has the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for “turning on” the body’s sweat glands. By blocking, or interrupting, this chemical messenger, Botox “turns off” sweating at the area where it has been injected. Injections are very shallow, so the medicine remains just below the surface of the skin and does not affect the muscles.

What can Botox for Hyperhidrosis treat ?

Those who suffer from Hyperhidrosis sweat profusely regardless of temperature, physical exertion, or nervousness. As a result, they are often left with cold, sweaty palms, stained clothing, and body odor. Botox injections can allow patients to live more comfortably and without social embarrassment.

What is a Botox for Hyperhidrosis session like?

During the procedure, a very fine needle is used to inject tiny amounts of Botox just under the skin intermittently throughout the area of excessive sweating (in a grid pattern, approximately every 1 to 2 centimeters). Multiple injections are given based on our assessment of the area that needs to be treated. To ease any potential discomfort, we may use one or more of a number of anesthetic techniques such as nerve blocks, ice, or vibration analgesia.

What can I expect during recovery?

You can resume most normal activity immediately after Botox injections. For best results, we recommend remaining upright for the first 4 hours to prevent the treatment from migrating to other areas.

The following practices should be followed for 24 hours after your Hyperhidrosis treatment:

  • Keep the under-arm area clean
  • Do not rub or touch the treatment area
  • Avoid antiperspirants/deodorants
  • Do not shave the underarm area
  • Do not take extremely hot showers
  • Avoid exercising or strenuous activity
  • Avoid swimming
  • Do not drink excessive alcohol

In addition, you should avoid underarm hair removal procedures such as laser or electrolysis for at least 2 weeks.

What results can be expected from Botox for Hyperhidrosis treatment?

When used to treat underarm excessive sweating, Botox has been shown to decrease sweating by 82-87%. Results will start to be noticeable approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment, with full effects usually noted within 2 weeks. Dryness typically lasts 4 to 12 months, but some studies have found it can last as long as 14. For best results, patients should repeat Botox injections every 4-6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How safe is it?
In 2004, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the underarms) in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. BOTOX is produced by Allergan, Inc., of Irvine, California, and it is the most studied brand of botulinum toxin in the world. BOTOX is approved to treat a total of eight medical conditions in the United States and received its first FDA approval in 1989. Over the years it has been used to treat millions of patients with various conditions, including spasticity and movement disorders.
