What is miraDry® for hyperhydrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the clinical term for excessive sweating. This condition can be more than just an inconvenience—it can affect your confidence and daily life. Though hyperhidrosis can affect multiple areas of the body, it is very common in the underarm area.

For anyone who is tired of dealing with underarm sweat and odor caused by hyperhidrosis, a solution is available: miraDry®. This non-invasive, permanent, FDA-approved procedure can reduce underarm issues in as little as one treatment.

While the primary goal of miraDry® is to treat excessive sweating, the treatment can also reduce unwanted hair, making it a comprehensive solution for underarm care.

How does miraDry® work for hyperhidrosis?

miraDry® uses thermal energy to heat and destroy the sweat and odor glands in your armpits—meaning you’ll experience much less perspiration and odor. These glands do not regenerate, making the results permanent. Because the underarms contain only 2% of the body’s sweat glands, eliminating these does not affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature.

Though thermal energy used during the treatment targets sweat glands, because hair follicles are located in close proximity, many patients notice a reduction in underarm hair as an added benefit of miraDry® treatment.

Who is a candidate for miraDry®?

miraDry® is suitable for anyone who struggles with excessive sweating in the armpit area, whether due to hyperhidrosis or simply a desire to reduce sweat and odor. Ideal candidates:

  • Experience noticeable underarm sweating that interferes with daily life
  • Have tried antiperspirants or other treatments without success
  • Are looking for a non-invasive, permanent solution

A consultation with your Forefront dermatologist can help determine if miraDry® is the right option for you.

What is a miraDry® session like?

miraDry® treatment is quick and non-invasive, usually lasting about an hour.

First, your Forefront dermatologist will numb your underarm and mark the area with a template guide. Then the miraDry® handheld applicator is used to target sweat and odor glands beneath the underarm skin with thermal energy. This precise application of heat selectively destroys sweat glands without causing damage to the surrounding tissue. You may feel slight warmth during the treatment, but it is generally mild and not painful.

After the session, you can resume normal activities, though some swelling and/or soreness may occur. These side effects typically resolve within a few days.

What results can be expected from miraDry®?

Results are permanent: Once your sweat and odor glands are destroyed, they do not regenerate.

Most patients report a dramatic reduction of their underarm sweat starting immediately after treatment. In a recent clinical study, the average underarm sweat reduction was 82% or more, and many patients also notice less underarm hair.
