Dr. Linda Heffernan graduated magna cum laude with Phi Beta Kappa honors as a Presidential Scholar from The George Washington University, where she was a Chemistry major and Fine Arts minor. She then received her Masters of Science degree in Theoretical Chemistry from Oxford University in England and backpacked through Europe and Africa.

While completing the combined MD/PhD program at the Medical University of South Carolina, she earned a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Pre-doctoral Fellowship grant to support her research focused on the role of sphingolipids and p53 in cancer biology. She presented her work at several international conferences and received other grants and research awards in addition to authoring and co-authoring several publications. During that time, she also had the opportunity to travel to Asia and South America.

Following her internship at Greenville Health Systems in South Carolina, she completed her Dermatology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School. While a resident, she received the Skin Cancer Foundation Ashley Trenner Research Award grant funding to investigate the role of sphingosine kinase 1 in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and served as Chief Resident during her final year of residency.

Dr. Heffernan practices general dermatology with a focus on the treatment and prevention skin cancers. She enjoys spending time with her three children in her free time.

My first time as a patient. I had to travel from Burlington to Cary, but it was well worth it. Everyone was so courteous and helpful, from the receptionist to Dr. Heffernan's assistant, to Dr.Heffernan. They asked many questions about my problem and I felt like they sincerely listened about my concerns and frustrations. I had been expecting to end up having Botox injections to my scalp, but was pleased to find out there were other options to try before going there. I have to say I had a good inner feeling when I walked in for my appointment, and I was not disappointed.

Dr Heffernan has provided my dermatological care for several years. As her patient I can attest without reservation she is a highly skilled knowledgeable doctor. Her credentials as both an MD and PhD indicates to me she is not only a skilled practitioner but also keeps abreast and is knowledgeable of current research in her field. I like doctors that read the research. She is very compassionate , thorough and comprehensive in her examination. She is extremely patient and never gives me the feeling of being rushed through the questions I sometimes ask. On occasion I have made unscheduled appointments with suspected skin issues. The office is very accommodating and Dr Heffernan is always responsive to address my concerns. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for dermatological care.

Went in for a sick visit unrelated to moles and Dr. Heffernan spotted a mole on my leg. She did a biopsy and it came back positive for moderate risk. We scheduled the extration which she performed beautifully. So grateful to have a knowledgeable dermatologist I can trust to spot things even I wouldn't have brought up! Thank you Dr. Heffernan!
