Holiday Cosmetic Treatments: What to Schedule Now and What Can Wait Until January
Table of contents
Thinking about a cosmetic treatment before the holidays? You may have more options than you think, even if your calendar is already filling up. Some treatments can give your skin a quick refresh, while others are worth scheduling now so you can enjoy the results in the new year.
But here's something you may not realize: Just because a treatment has little or no downtime doesn't mean its full results appear right away. So when planning a cosmetic treatment around a special occasion, there are two timelines to consider: How long your skin needs to recover, and how long it takes to see the results you want. They're not always the same.
“Timing is just as important as choosing the right cosmetic treatment,” says Ashley Dietrich, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Forefront Dermatology. “Some treatments deliver a quick refresh, while others need several weeks for results to develop. Our goal is to help patients look and feel their best for their special occasion, without rushing the process.”
Here's a general guide to help you plan treatment around holiday events:
How far before the holidays should you schedule cosmetic treatments?
Treatment | What It Helps With | When to Schedule Before an Event |
HydraFacial | Dryness, dullness, hydration | Several days |
DiamondGlow | Rough texture, dullness, clogged pores | Several days |
Dermaplaning | Surface texture, smoother makeup application | Several days |
BOTOX Cosmetic / Dysport | Expression lines and wrinkles | About 2 weeks |
Dermal Fillers | Facial volume, certain lines and wrinkles | At least 2–3 weeks |
Light Chemical Peels | Uneven tone, dullness, rough texture | About 1–2 weeks |
Microneedling | Acne scars, fine lines, uneven texture | Several weeks to months for meaningful results |
Medium/Deep Chemical Peels | More significant wrinkles, discoloration, and texture changes | Plan well ahead or consider January |
Intensive Laser Resurfacing | Wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, uneven texture | Plan well ahead or consider January |
These are general planning guidelines, not guarantees. Your dermatologist can recommend an appropriate timeline based on the treatment, your skin, and your individual recovery needs.
Cosmetic Treatments That Can Help When the Holidays Are Close
If your big event is just a few days away, you haven't necessarily missed your chance to give your skin a little extra attention. Some cosmetic treatments can deliver noticeable improvements quickly, without extended recovery periods. These are especially appealing if you're looking for a refreshed appearance rather than a dramatic change.
HydraFacial®: If holiday stress and winter weather have left your complexion looking dull or dry, a HydraFacial may be just what your skin needs. This multi-step treatment uses a specialized suction system to cleanse pores, gently exfoliate, and deliver hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. Many people notice smoother, more radiant skin after one session, with little downtime. Allow a few days before your event in case you experience temporary redness or sensitivity.
DiamondGlowl®: DiamondGlow takes a slightly different approach. A diamond-tipped wand physically exfoliates dead surface skin cells while extracting impurities and infusing the skin with customized serums. It's particularly appealing if you're concerned about rough texture, clogged pores, or uneven-looking skin. Many patients notice an immediate improvement in smoothness and radiance. As with HydraFacial, scheduling several days ahead provides a cushion for possible irritation.
Dermaplaning: Ever notice how foundation seems to cling to dry patches or look uneven, no matter how carefully you apply it? Dermaplaning gently removes dead surface skin cells and fine facial hair (often called peach fuzz), creating a smoother surface for makeup. It's a relatively quick procedure with immediate results and little downtime. While most people can return to their usual activities right away, temporary redness or irritation is possible. Scheduling a few days before your event gives your skin a chance to settle.
Treatments to Schedule a Few Weeks Ahead
If you have a little more time before your holiday events, several popular cosmetic treatments may still be worth considering. The key is allowing enough time for results to develop and any temporary side effects to resolve.

Results begin developing within days but can take approximately two weeks to reach their full effect, depending on the product. Scheduling at least two weeks ahead allows time for the treatment to work and for possible bruising to resolve.
Dermal Fillers: Fillers can restore facial volume, soften certain lines, or enhance features such as the lips and cheeks. Although changes may be visible immediately, swelling and bruising can take a couple of weeks to settle. Allow at least two to three weeks before an important event, especially if it's your first treatment.
Light Chemical Peels: A superficial peel can improve dullness, uneven tone, and rough texture. Some involve very little visible peeling, while others cause several days of redness or flaking. Allowing one to two weeks before an event is a reasonable starting point, depending on the specific peel and how your skin responds.
Cosmetic Treatments That Might Be Better Left Until January
If you're considering a treatment that requires significant recovery time or takes months to deliver its full results, there's no need to squeeze it into an already busy holiday schedule. Waiting until January may give your skin more time to heal without worrying about parties, family photos, or other commitments.
“The best cosmetic results come from thoughtful planning, not rushing to meet a deadline,” says Dr. Dietrich. “For treatments that require more recovery time, waiting until after the holidays can be the better choice. It gives your skin time to heal and allows us to focus on achieving the best possible long-term results.”
Treatments worth postponing include:
Microneedling: Although initial redness usually resolves within several days, collagen production and visible improvements take weeks or months. There's little advantage to rushing treatment for a holiday event.
Medium or Deep Chemical Peels: More intensive peels can involve substantial redness, peeling, and sensitivity. Recovery may take several weeks, depending on the treatment.
Intensive Laser Skin Resurfacing: More aggressive laser treatments may require extended healing time, with redness or sensitivity lingering well beyond the initial recovery period.
Of course, you don't have to wait until January to start planning. A consultation now can help you decide which treatment makes sense and choose a date when you'll have time to recover comfortably.
Make a Plan That Works for Your Skin—and Your Schedule
The best time for a cosmetic treatment isn't necessarily the soonest appointment you can get. It's the one that gives you enough time to enjoy the results without worrying about how your skin will look or feel along the way.
Before booking, consider how much flexibility you have:
Is this a treatment you've had before, or are you trying something new?
Do you have one important event coming up, or a month full of gatherings?
If you experience a little extra redness, swelling, or bruising, will you have time to let it resolve?
These are all good questions to discuss with your dermatologist. Even two people receiving the same treatment may heal differently, and your provider can help you set realistic expectations based on your skin, treatment history, and goals.
Remember, there's no deadline for taking care of your skin. Whether you're hoping for a quick refresh before the holidays or considering a more involved treatment in January, the right plan is one that fits your goals and gives you enough time to recover comfortably.
