What is an IPL® photofacial?
An IPL® photofacial is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target redness and early signs of aging like fine lines and age spots, especially those caused by sun damage. The IPL® (intense pulsed light) device emits multIPL®e wavelengths of light customized to address a variety of skin concerns. It penetrates the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production and encouraging your body’s natural healing process.
Also called photorejuvenation, the IPL® procedure is quick and involves no downtime, making it a convenient option for people with busy schedules.
REQUEST NOWHow does IPL® work?
During an IPL® photofacial, intense pulses of light are used to penetrate deep into the skin. This light penetrates the surface and generates heat, which causes collagen and blood vessels below the skin to constrict, reducing redness and signs of aging without harming the surrounding tissue.
As your body’s natural healing process removes the damaged cells, you’ll notice improvements in skin tone, texture, and clarity. The ability to use multIPL®e wavelengths makes IPL® effective for targeting a variety of concerns including sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and redness in a single treatment. Over time, IPL® treatments lead to a brighter, more even complexion.
What can IPL® treat?
People who have blotchy, sun-damaged, or discolored skin, or whose skin is affected by large pores, freckles, or wrinkles, may benefit from an IPL® photofacial.
The treatment can address a variety of common skin concerns, including:
- Sun damage: Reduces sun spots and discoloration
- Hyperpigmentation: Evens out skin tone by targeting dark spots
- Redness: Minimizes facial redness caused by broken capillaries
- Fine lines and wrinkles: Boosts collagen to smooth out fine lines
- Acne scars: Reduces the appearance of scars from past breakouts
- Freckles: Lightens freckles and other spots caused by UV exposure
Who is a candidate for IPL® photofacial treatment?
IPL® photofacials work best for clients with light to medium skin tones who want to address surface-level imperfections. For darker skin tones, IPL® may work, but options such as chemical peels may be more effective. A consultation with your Forefront skincare professional will determine whether IPL® is the right choice for your goals and skin type.
What is an IPL® session like?
An IPL® photofacial is a straightforward treatment that usually takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. First, your provider will cleanse your skin and apply a cooling gel to make the treatment more comfortable. They will also give you protective goggles to wear during the next step. Next, they will use a handheld IPL® device that delivers pulses of light to the treatment area. You may feel a mild stinging sensation during this phase.
After the session, your provider will remove the gel and apply sunscreen. Your skin may appear slightly red or feel warm, like a mild sunburn. You can return to daily activities right away, but expect temporary discoloration or redness of the affected area for a few days.
Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun following an IPL® treatment. Your Forefront team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, including avoiding the sun and wearing sunblock whenever you are outdoors.
What results can I expect from an IPL® photofacial?
You will see noticeable results a week or two after the first session, with improvements in skin tone, texture, and overall appearance. However, for optimal results, most patients undergo three to six monthly treatments. Then, maintenance treatments every six to twelve months can help maintain the results.
