The Cutera® laser uses controlled heat to kill acne-causing bacteria while simultaneously treating early scars caused by acne. Unlike other superficial treatments, this procedure penetrates deep into the skin’s cellular layer and counters the overactive sebaceous glands, promoting new skin cell and collagen growth. By also stopping overactive sebaceous glands from producing too much oil, Cutera® prevents pores from becoming clogged.
What can Cutera® treat?
The laser is usually applied on the face and/or neck, and treatment takes from 30-45 minutes. It helps to treat acne and shrink pores on the neck, cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. It’s also effective at smoothing fine lines, scars, and rough skin, and is an excellent treatment for rosacea.
What is a Cutera® Laser Genesis session like?
Before the procedure, the areas to be treated will be cleaned and marked with a pen. A local anesthetic is usually used to numb the area before treatment. You may also be given light sedation to help you relax.
If your whole face is going to be treated, you will need to wear protective goggles and may be given pain relievers or stronger anesthesia.
As treatment begins, your provider will pass the laser over the targeted area, sending out pulses. Each pulse lasts less than a millisecond. Between passes with the laser, the skin will be wiped with water or a saltwater solution to cool the skin and remove tissue that the laser has destroyed.
Depending on the condition of your skin, you may feel a slight burning sensation or “snapping,” similar to a rubber band.
What results can be expected from Cutera®?
Cutera® laser genesis requires little to no down time, but you will notice some redness that will subside within a few hours. Fewer acne breakouts and smoother skin will be evident within 3-4 weeks. For lasting results, most patients need 4-6 treatments spaced about a month apart.
Is Cutera® acne treatment right for me?
Cutera® laser resurfacing is an excellent option for many patients seeking acne or acne scar treatment. However, it’s best to consult a qualified Forefront dermatologist who can evaluate your skin condition and aesthetic goals. Your doctor may caution against Cutera® laser treatment if you:
- Have taken the acne medication isotretinoin
- Have diabetes, a connective tissue or autoimmune disease, or a weak immune system
- Have a history of radiation therapy to your face
- Have a history of ridged areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue (keloids)
- Are pregnant or breast-feeding
