Rosacea Treatments

In Melbourne, FL

Rosacea is a chronic condition, and, left untreated, its symptoms will gradually worsen over time. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available for this condition at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, and double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, serving residents of Melbourne, Indialantic, Viera, Brevard County, the beaches, and nearby communities in Central Florida.

WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a complex inflammatory skin condition that causes facial redness, swelling, and bumps. Treatment varies according to what type of rosacea is being treated and the extent of the condition.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ROSACEA?

The most common symptom of rosacea is a flushed, red face with sensitive skin that may burn or sting. Some patients may exhibit small bumps and pimples or acne-like breakouts. In advanced cases, the skin becomes coarser and thicker, with a bumpy texture, particularly around the nose. Ocular rosacea affects the eyes, producing dry, red, irritated eyes.

WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA AND HOW CAN IT BE PREVENTED?

The cause of rosacea remains unknown, but scientists have concluded that rosacea is a reaction to something that irritates the skin. Rosacea symptoms may flare up when something causes the blood vessels in the face to expand, causing redness and irritation. Irritants that may cause flare-ups are called triggers. Common triggers include strenuous exercise, heat, exposure to sun and wind, emotional stress, certain foods and beverages, gastrointestinal infections, and even ingredients in skin care products. Rosacea more often affects people with fair skin who blush easily, and there seems to be a hereditary component. Visit www.rosacea.org for more information on rosacea.

HOW IS ROSACEA TREATED?

There are many treatments available for rosacea including prescriptions such as Soolantra, azelaic acid gel, and oral Oracea (low dose doxycycline). We have also had great success with our own specialized prescription topical compound.

HERE ARE SOME ROSACEA TREATMENT DO’S AND DON’TS.

Do make a medical visit to evaluate & review treatment options. Rosacea is a medical condition. Don’t ignore skin redness, sensitivity, or rosacea when it is mild as early diagnosis and treatment work better.

Do consider an Excel V laser treatment series to lessen sensitivity, visible capillaries, and redness.

Don’t use scrubs or acne-specific washes. Gentle cleansing such as with SalujaMD aloe cleanser can be helpful.

Don’t use a chemical sunscreen; choose All Calm mineral sunscreen specifically designed to calm rosacea.

Do assess for ocular rosacea. Treatment for mild to moderate ocular rosacea may include artificial tears, oral antibiotics, and daily cleansing of the eyelashes and eye region. More advanced cases should be examined by an eye specialist, who may prescribe ophthalmic treatments.

HOW MUCH DO ROSACEA TREATMENTS COST IN CENTRAL FLORIDA?

Treatment for rosacea varies widely, depending on the type and extent of the condition being treated, and prices will vary accordingly. Rosacea treatments may in some cases be covered in part by health insurance carriers. We also encourage the use of health savings or flexible savings accounts.
